How The Driverless Dubai Metro Is Altering Emiratis’ Daily Life

A few years ago, it would have been at least rash to think about the Metro in the Arab Emirates, though traffic jam already was one of the most irritating aspects of Dubai’s daily life. But around the end of the last millennium the UAE Authorities decided to completely change their perspective towards environment and sustainability.

Among the countless decisions carried out after changing their perspective and joining the “Green Cause”, there was also the planning of the Dubai Metro, whose approval occurred at the beginning of the 2000s. Construction works began in 2005, thus originating considerable problems to residents, who really showed flexibility in the following years up to September, 9th 2009, when the Dubai Metro was finally declared open. A magnificent ceremony at 09:00 p.m. of 09.09.09 (not randomly!) lead by His Highness Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s ruler which was broadcast in all of the Emirates, officially inaugurated the Dubai Metro.

Now that residents are enjoying the incredible advantages of travelling by metro, the inclination towards the massive works in progress for the further lines to be open from next Spring on is steadily rising.

Reaching also the Palm Monorail Dubai Metro – the first kind of rail transport in Dubai, developed on the palm-shaped archipelagos opposite to Dubai’s coast – Dubai Metro serves as many city districts as possible with its two lines already operating and undoubtedly contributes to strongly reduce air pollution and traffic jam as well.

I would not be astonisehd to hear soon about new railway projects in other Emirates or even in other countries of the Arabian Peninsula. Just think about Abu Dhabi or Riyadh in Saudi Arabia: it’s just a matter of time before seeing them launch their metro projects!
